A similar study conducted by the Department of Medicine, College of Medical Science University of Maiduguri Nigeria reported that a combination of Vernonia amygdalina extract and metformin shows significant decrease in the blood glucose level compared to the diabetic control and group of animals administered with plant extract alone and concluded that combining metformin with the plant extract of bitter leaf produced a more hypoglycemic effect than using metformin or the plant extracts singly. According to a publication in the Medical Journal of Islamic World Academy of Sciences, bitter leaf does not only reduce the blood sugar to levels comparable with that of chlorpropamide which is a standard drug used in the management of diabetes, it also helps to repair the pancreas. The pancreas is an organ located behind the lower part of the stomach, in front of the spine and plays an important part in diabetes.
