Alzheimer’s Is Not Normal Aging — And We Can Cure It | Samuel Cohen | TED Talks

WHAT READERS ARE SAYING:

Our mother died at 95, at home in her bed, with loved ones surrounding. She was initially, MIS diagnosed as having Alz (she had mixed senile dementia, in fact) twice by the geriatric service of a respected major NY institution. When Medicaid refused to give us any help because we were 'too rich" ($29,000 in the bank, period. Nothing more), we told THEM all to piss up a rope, and brought mom to live with my sister. The next three years, we rolled up our sleeves, shared and joined together: cared for her, as she was still, except for the memory loss , some physical frailty and occasional moodiness - pretty ok. She was bathed, groomed, fed, calmed, kept safe, socially stimulated, joked with, taken for walks, enjoyed the pets, regularly got medical check ups to see how she was doing (excellent, thank you very much!) allowed to participate in every facet of life as she always had, pre-dementia. The last months were filled with dignity, kindness and peace. It altered the trajectory of our lives for good and all, changing our view forever. And we were honored to help the dear lady who brought us into the world, leave it, when her time came to go Home... with grace and calm. We would do it exactly the same if given that chance today. More than one person referred to my sister and I as 'inspirations'..which speaks well of us, but doesn't say much for the morons at Medicaid, etc. The medical 'insurance' industry is a travesty, an utter abomination. High handed in its bureaucratic arrogance, excluding the very people who need help the most - at times when they most need it. Often I saw greed, incompetence, and appalling stupid short sightedness. From attorneys who should have been disbarred, bankers who should have been censured, nurses who should have been fired. Millions of Americans now home care an elder beloved with some type of dementia, due to 'insurance gaps'. I am writing a book about this, and will, in the end, mention names - where needed. I saw much that made me want to scream. Also much to make me proud to be a daughter, and an unpaid caregiver. Heartwarming, as well as heartbreaking? You bet.

Rather than provide a drug which costs money to treat Alzheimers, why not stop consuming items that cause it. Aluminum is found in high concentration in the brains of Alzheimer sufferers. Aluminum has been known for over 50yrs to be a neurotoxin. We get it from soda cans, beer cans, aluminum foil on the BBQ, aluminum packaging like Capri Sun, etc. What he forgot to tell the audience is that Aluminum first went into industrial production just before the first Alzhiemers case was reported. We dont need another drug, we need to stop coming into contact with toxic metals like aluminum and mercury.

TURMERIC. India has a very low rate of Alzheimer's and they believe it is due to turmeric and the active ingredient in it called curcumin. My family has a history of Alzheimer's, as in ALL women in my mother's side of the family would get it (or dementia) by their 50's. I'm 70 and fine. I was getting forgetful, so I started taking it, and all of a sudden I could access info I read many decades ago. I also grow it in a pot indoors, since I live in Minnesota. I use it in recipes. Cheap and easy to grow once you get a piece of root, I also grow ginger the same way. It also has been know to show promise with the condition (which is not a disease since you don't catch it from anyone else). But, since I'm not a doctor, I am not telling anyone to use. I use both in recipes, since I like Asian food and cooking and they are cooking herbs very common in Asian cooking. For those who don't know India is in Asia.

1caramarie OMG I'm from Minnesota as well! I'm 22 and I recently discovered that I'm having horrible memory loss and I don't know why and I'm scared that it's early Alzheimer's or dementia. Where do you get your turmeric and ginger root and what brand do you use?! Please I'm desperate and need help
@justrollwith it. We all get more forgetful. That's not Alzheimer's. There's only a handful of families in the world that have a 100% Alzheimer's rate. You're fine. And don't believe the turmeric idea. It's not peer reviewed, real science. Please talk to your doctor about your fears and the Alzheimer's Association for real information on potential causes.
Hello, Just read your comment n desire to have the tumeric n ginger roots. I am from Indian state of Maharashtra. Please send me E-mail to sve_bakanjalkar@gmail.com. May be we can interact and considering on it. Regards. Bhalchandra
Bhalchandra, turmeric and ginger roots grow all over India. You probably have seen it and don't know what they are. Just ask or look it up here on YouTube. I learned to grow both using YouTube videos from India.
Just Roll, you can find ginger root in any grocery store in Minnesota. I live in the middle of nowhere, so I had to order the turmeric root online (Jungseed dot com), but any Asian market would probably carry the root. As to the powdered turmeric and ginger, I buy an organic brand, not the regular spices, which often have other things added. I don't know how I missed your post. As to what Sandra said, my mother keep getting worse and worse under the recommended "Alzheimer's Association" treatment.

Check out Dr Neal Barnard´s videos. He also has books on the subject. His dad died from Alzheimer´s. He is an expert on using nutrition to prevent and even reverse various diseases. Dr Greger also has an interesting talk on the top 15 causes of death and how to prevent them with a whole foods diet. I can´t remember what number dementia is. He also has a book called "How Not To Die".

@Just Roll With It! the same thing happened to me 2 years ago, at the age of 39. It's severe B12 deficiency. Get some 6000 mcg methylcobalamin supplements, 1 a day under the tongue with methyl folate B9 and tell me in 3 months if you're not better!
Do not use anything aluminum!!!!!!! Do not use deodorant if you get stinky go wash yourself am still trying to give up aluminum foil ugggg i use it a lot but gotta give it up
@Jipsie Mune Nutmeg can be toxic if you take too much. Read the "Nutmeg Toxicity" article on www.nutritionfacts.org . The toxic dose is 2-3 teaspoons. BE CAREFUL!!
@vegan til I die can are you on e mail..? I want to know more of your story. I'm into healing and not pharmaceutical drugs..
1caramarie ...I believe in Turmeric too.

I'd have to be dang stupid to miss India. It's gonna huGe. Can u grow Finding root that way also?
Jipsie mune Put parchment paper on your food then wrap in foil if it’s something you’re cooking in the oven.
@Sandra Tulloss sorry but I don't agree with your patting Just Roll on the head and telling him/her to relax. You sound like an employee for big pharma.
Thank you for your insights. I will begin taking herbs as you say, also, there is one that freshens your mouth and is antibacterial. A guy at work has them in his pocket and shared it out. I will ask him what is good to take everyday. I have dandelion root capsules which I will chew before swallowing. We don't live close to nature anymore and seen as though it is how we did for 100s of thousands of yrs before mass farming and the industrial revolution we need to go back to eating more of the plants and seeds we were congruent with as I'm sure this is how we evolved in synergy and is the reason why the human gut and digestion is so full of cellular and bacterial co-operation which is highly evolved and very complex. It must be kept in harmony with the plants we ate:)
