HERBAL MEDICINE PRACTICE IN GHANA - A PROFESSIONAL’S POINT OF VIEW.

#HERBAL MEDICINE PRACTICE IN GHANA - A PROFESSIONAL’S POINT OF VIEW.
In the health sector in Ghana, herbal medicine is always looked down upon. I know of some orthodox doctors who, upon knowing that his patient has a history of herbal medicine use, concludes the cause of whatever illness is the herbal medicine.
It’s sometimes sad when you’re a professional in the field of herbal medicine to hear some of these things.
Sometimes you will wonder if there is evidence to proof that all herbal medicines are harmful or its just a propaganda tool against the herbal industry.
This is a worrying trend which we must deal with. I must admit that some herbs could be toxic but so is any other medicine even orthodox.
The problem with herbal medicine is the lack of documentation on its efficacy and side effects and also field is dominated by indigenous practitioners who may not be able to understand the scientific bits of herbal medicines.
This problem is being addressed through the introduction of herbal medicine services in the mainstream health care in Ghana.
Most people do not know that herbal medicine can be accessed at district hospitals in Ghana so they end up visiting all sorts of practitioners who may cause more harm than good.
There are also some private hospitals who employ the services of professionally trained Medical Herbalist who also provides quality herbal medicines.
The Medical Herbalist is trained at KNUST in the field of herbal medicine. After school the Medical Herbalist uses scientific methods in diagnosing.
The only difference between the Medical Herbalist and a Medical Doctor is the type of medications prescribed; the Medical Herbalist prescribes herbs while the Medical Doctor prescribes orthodox medicines.
Always remember that herbal medicine is a science and practitioners must practice as such.
Never look down on herbal medicine.
Get herbs from the experts
Ask questions when you don’t understand herbs.
